Have you ever felt uncomfortable in your own skin, or rather, the clothes you choose to put on it? Choosing your outfits based on a picture you saw or what you feel “is all the rage” instead of choosing what feels good to you, and what truly expresses the person you are? Everyone struggles with this on and off throughout the years, I know I have. So no matter where your style inspo comes from, or if you want to pull a full 180° on your style from time to time and feel proud of those heads you turn, you can. Here are a few simple ways on how to feel confident in any outfit you choose!
1. Don’t focus on what others are wearing, what makes you happy?
There’s not a consistent mood we wake up in every day so why do our outfits have to be? Dress for what you feel that day! Whether you are feeling a bit more sporty, casual and cozy, classy, want to reach for those neutrals or go for something a bit bolder, don’t let anyone stop you. Dress for how you feel, and what works for you in your lifestyle. If you start paying attention to how you feel and dress in accordance with that, you will feel a lot more comfortable as you go about your day.
Your wardrobe needs to work for you, not the other way around!
2. Stop worrying that people are judging you.
Stop playing the comparison game, plain and simple. I know this seems easier said than done. But here’s the thing, most people are too busy worrying about themselves or their own lives, that most people won’t notice what you might be worried about anyway. When you let go of what everyone thinks, you’ll start to feel more comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing. Your opinion is the one that matters most, no one else, just remember that!
3. Build off of your go-to’s!
We all have those go-to pieces that make up our favorite outfits where we feel the most comfortable and confident. A good place to start to switch up your style is to build off of this comfort zone- slowly add bold pieces to one of your favorite outfits so you don’t feel too self-conscious when you wear them out. This could be something so small as a bold colored shoe, statement coat, or other accessories. Keep building until you feel fully confident in something more bold, or completely different from your everyday style if that’s what you’re going for. Starting small and building up is a process, it will take time but have fun with it. Try new things, and see what happens! It’s all about mindset for this one!
4. Don’t be afraid to show off your favorite parts of yourself!
You know what they say… if you got it, flaunt it!! When you are putting outfits together try to build them around the things you like most about yourself. So if you like your waist, put on a belt to show it off. If you like your legs, wear more dresses and skirts. If you like your back and shoulders, wear something that’s more off the shoulder. It also doesn’t have to be a body part either. If you like your hair, your smile, play to that- add a fun lipstick or try a new hairstyle and keep the outfit more simple. If it’s just that you are a bubbly and happy person don’t be afraid to show that with vibrant colors. If you bring attention to the things you like most about yourself, you’ll feel the best about the attention you bring!
5. Stop holding back!
Don’t wait for the opportunity to present itself to dress the way you want. We can find excuses everywhere, waiting for when you move, when you lose weight, when you start a new job, etc. You don’t need a reason to start experimenting with your style and try something new. We don’t need a big life event to feel confident or start dressing like the real YOU. Take chances, get rid of things in your closet that doesn’t make you feel good and replace them, don’t waste time waiting, life is too short!
These might seem pretty simple but sometimes when we’re struggling and we’re stuck in a mindset, it’s helpful to just have someone say “it’s ok” and give us these helpful reminders or just straight up tell us what to do.
Life is honestly too short to not feel comfortable and confident in the world, and the clothes you wear in it.
