How To: Make your Home Cozy This Fall

Make your Home Cozy

Now that I am a homeowner (inner shriek of excitement!) I am so pumped to get into the seasonal spirit and add those small touches that I wouldn’t do in my apartment. So today, I’ll take you through a step-by-step guide on how to make your home irresistibly cozy this fall season.

1. Warm Color Palette: Start with the Basics

Consider updating your home’s color palette to reflect the cozy tones of fall. Opt for earthy hues like deep oranges, warm browns, and rich burgundies. Incorporate these shades into your walls, furniture, and decorative accents. If you are like me and like to still keep things neutral, you can just adjust your items from cooler tones to warmer tones that are still neutral to support that aesthetic.

2. Layer Up: Add Textures

Introduce a variety of textures to your space for that ultimate cozy feeling. Think plush throws, soft cushions, and fluffy rugs. Layering different textures creates a tactile experience that instantly makes a room feel inviting. Layering blankets that are of different textures on my bed is the easiest way I have found to bring that coziness in. I also tend to be a bit messier with my blanket basket, letting some of the edges of the blankets flow over the edge and layer to help with this- it’s purposeful so don’t be afraid to play with it.

3. Candlelit Ambiance: Set the Mood

Candles not only provide soft lighting but also contribute to the cozy ambiance. Scatter scented candles throughout your space, embracing fragrances like pumpkin spice, cinnamon, or vanilla for that quintessential fall aroma. If you are not comfortable with candles, consider wax melts, plug in scents or even a simmer pot to fill your home with fragrance.

4. Foliage and Florals: Bring the Outdoors In

Incorporate elements from nature by decorating your home with fall foliage and flowers. Arrange bouquets of dried flowers, pinecones, and twigs in vases or as centerpieces to capture the rustic charm of the season. Even switching out the planters of the plants you already have could be another option to bring in warmer tones.

5. Soft Blankets and Throws: Create Snuggle Spots

Drape soft, chunky blankets and throws over your couches and chairs. Not only do they add warmth, but they also invite you to curl up and unwind on chilly autumn evenings.

6. Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice: Seasonal Decor

Infuse your home with fall-themed decor, including pumpkin and leaf motifs. Swap out your regular table settings for autumn-inspired ones and hang wreaths made of dried leaves on your front door.

7. Hot Beverages Station: Set Up a Cozy Corner

Consider adding fall inspired drinks to your beverage line-up. Have tea, cider or hot chocolate easily accessible to get you in the spirit and to enjoy the changing season as it comes.

8. Autumn-Inspired Artwork: Capture the Season

Swap out your existing artwork with pieces that reflect the beauty of fall. Consider paintings, prints, or photographs that showcase fall landscapes and changing leaves. I usually have black and white photos up, so I don’t feel the need to bring in new artwork but if you have bright colored paintings this could be an option to consider. Try not to get too “cliche” about it- steer away from quotes like “pumpkin spice and everything nice” to keep it feeling elevated. This could be a fun opportunity to do a DIY- plaster artwork that is popular, abstract paint smears, etc.

If nothing else, just stay true to your style and make sure your home feels happy and lets you celebrate the season you are in!
